Korra! [ Asami's been looking for Korra for about twenty minutes now, dodging airbender children and Varrick, who she still hasn't... quite forgiven, for everything. She'll get there. One day.
But Korra is here, and looking pretty happy and also really nice, and for now Asami is just glad to see her. ] What're you doing all the way over here?
I get that. [ It's still sort of wild to Asami how often they're on the same page. How Korra can say something and it'll have been what Asami was thinking, or feeling.
She grins and flops down into the chair next to Korra, pushing away someone else's half-full plate without a thought. ] I'm... sort of avoiding Varrick. I mean, I'm happy for Zhu Li! I guess. Even though I really don't get the appeal.
[ Korra laughs, something in her gut untangling. This is exactly what she needs right now. She needs Asami and her ability to distract Korra, but it's not even that. Asami centers her. She gets her. ] Me neither. How she's put up with him for all these years, and now she's marrying him? Yeesh.
And the thing about the callouses? It's not... my definition of love, but if they're happy, they're happy, I guess. [ She really tries to keep her voice upbeat at this next part but... kind of fails. ] Good for him.
Good for him. [ Korra agrees with a sigh. Her eyes slip back to the dark sky, the stars twinkling over the city. There are a lot fewer here than there were back home. Light pollution, Asami calls it. But they're still beautiful.
After a long moment, she adds ] Mako talked to me, earlier. I think we're finally okay. Normal. Whatever that means, now.
Oh—I wanted to ask how his arm was, but he was dancing. With Wu, it looked like. [ She leans a little closer to Korra, a little warm with the champagne someone shoved into her hand. Maybe that's what's making her feel so daring. Or maybe it's Korra, doing what she always does, and making Asami feel more than she is. ] Which you... haven't done yet, right?
[ Wow, the problem is, Korra looking at her with wide eyes and flushed cheeks does some things to Asami. Has for a while, but Korra's close and there's nothing trying to kill either one of them right now, so it's all very... present.
Asami is trying very hard to look casual. ] You should come dance with me.
I should warn you, I'm a pretty good dancer. [ It's kind of teasing and kind of an out if Korra doesn't really want to do this, because Asami is considerate like that. ] I don't want to upstage you or anything. [ Is that a challenge? Yes. It absolutely is. ]
[ Korra snorts a laugh, squeezing Asami's hand. ] Yeah, try to keep up with my Water Tribe dancing. Your United Republic dances are nothing in comparison.
Oh, is that what you were doing? [ Asami flashes her a little grin. She's teasing, but her heart is pounding. ] It's just, I've seen Water Tribe dances, and yours are a lot more.. enthusiastic. Than that.
You've seen Northern Water Tribe dancing. [ Korra retorts. She pulls Asami onto the dance floor, trying not to get distracted by how gorgeous Asami looks in that red dress. ] This is how we do it in the South.
[ It is enthusiastic. Maybe Asami is right about that. But Korra does her best to do what she learned all those years ago, moving her feet, her hips, her arms. It even makes her smile, which she really needs tonight. ]
[ Asami's definitely not dancing in the same way but damn it, she is doing her level best to keep up with Korra. She's laughing, and twirling right along with her, stomping her feet in her fancy heels.
Korra has this way of being that makes Asami feel—free, maybe, is the word for it. Like she doesn't have to be graceful, or pretty. This dance isn't either of those things, and that means Asami doesn't have to be either of those things: she can just be Asami, laughing and waving her arms and twirling close to Korra as the song comes to a close. They're both panting and grinning. ]
Okay, city girl. [ Korra pants, gripping Asami's arm. They're very close to one another, and Korra can feel Asami's breath on her cheek. ] Show me how they do it in Republic City.
Think you can keep up? [ Asami's feeling daring with all this closeness and Korra's hand strong and hot on her arm. The skin-to-skin contact, as innocent as it is, is making her whole body thrum with heat.
Tahno shifts into a new song, something sort of jazzy, and Asami flashes Korra a bright grin and drags her close, pressing one hand to the small of her back and grabbing her other hand tight.
She's used to following, but Asami's a better dancer than most of the boys she learned with. She can lead just fine. ]
[ That is not what she was expecting. Their bodies are pressed flush together and Korra is far too aware of Asami's hand on her back, her hand in Asami's.
And then there's Asami's face, so close to her own, smiling and determined and wow. She takes Korra's breath away. ]
Seems kinda easy. [ She manages to say, her voice too low ]

That isn't new, per say, but she hasn't had a real chance to think about. Not since they've been back together.
Her mind seems to stop, and only starts up again when Asami quirks an eyebrow at her ] Oh. What? Dancing? No. Not yet.
